EXCLUSIVE DEBUT: Wretched Tongues Release Ulter Praefinitum Into the Wild [2022]
Artist: Wretched Tongues
Album: Ulter Praefinitium
Wretched Tongues have come a long way from their modest beginnings as a New England deathcore act. Now emerging as a powerhouse in the international heavy music circuit, the band are gearing up to unleash the full length record Ulter Praefinitum, a stellar compendium of crushing aggression and sonic obliteration on a near-biblical scale. Combining blackened, melodic and technical elements into a melting pot of malevolent and murky deathcore, Ulter Praefinitum is a punishing release from beginning to end that sees the listener begging for mercy from its onset—and getting absolutely none for the following forty minutes.
Built around a bastion of blistering percussion and scathing fretwork, Wretched Tongues’ Ulter Praefinitum takes absolutely no prisoners. By the end of the introductory cut, “Pendulum of Existence” the listener will be out of breath—and by the end of ungodly songs like “Call of the Chasm” or “Mortality,” the listener will be barely alive. Combining the brazen, bold styles of deathcore that defined the band’s earlier bodies of work with a newfound penchant for the abysmal and dreary, songs like the aforementioned “Mortality,” or the murderous onslaught that is “Brain Itch” showcase high-octane percussion that blasts away in sharp contrast to the ten-ton fretwork and blistering vocal dynamism Wretched Tongues bring to the table. Other songs, like “Call of the Chasm” and “To Witness the Infinite” see the band amping up their symphonic and blackened influences, further juxtaposing technicality and speed against plodding, ten-ton aggression and atmosphere. Where Wretched Tongues have always been heavy, they are now dense and dissonant, crafting songs that take the listener on a journey while still beating them to within moments of pure senselessness. This notion of carnal depravity is abundant throughout Ulter Praefinitum.
As the band’s first foray into the world of full-length recordings, Ulter Praefinitum is utterly punishing and relentless without being overbearing. A more diverse and certainly more immense body of work than anything Wretched Tongues has hereto forth brought into the world, it is almost certainly the release by which their future records—and the records of their peers—will be judged against. Cruel, creative and thoroughly crushing, Ulter Praefinitum is a powerhouse, pure and simple.
