Interview – Doc Coyle – Bad Wolves: Doc Talks About His Gratitude And Working On The Album, “Disobey”
New Transcendence had a chance to talk with Doc Coyle formerly of God Forbid about his latest band, Bad Wolves. Doc Coyle and Bad Wolves have already played on tours with Five Finger Death Punch, Shinedown and even brought in Diamante for their track, “Hear Me Now” which was a crowd favorite and now blasting on the airwaves. Let’s take a look at what Doc had to say to New Transcendence.
Toney Emmons (New Transcendence):
Bad Wolves are taking the world by storm, after the first two tracks and the outstanding success of, “Zombie” — How is it being in this breakout band?
Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves):
It’s a combination of overwhelming and just straight up weird. I’ve struggled in the music industry for so long, having a band be this successful this quickly just feels alien. The other main emotion and thing I focus on is just gratitude. Everyday I feel lucky to be in this position to be able to play in front of huge audiences, to have people really care about the band, to be able to be on a tour bus and have some comfort. I am doing my best to try and enjoy the moment but also not take anything for granted. I don’t want to get too comfortable, lazy, or become a spoiled asshole. I understand that this can go away as easily as it came into being.
Toney Emmons (New Transcendence):
How was the collective effort in the process of becoming a part of Bad Wolves?
Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves):
The most collective aspect of developing the band was when we were working on our live show. A lot of the music was written in the studio, so the work to translate the sounds and fantastic production into a live and organic band was very intensive. We all invested a lot of money in gear and rehearsed like mad. It’s one thing to play music together. It’s a whole other to BE a band. Playing almost everyday on tour has really connected us all as well.
Toney Emmons (New Transcendence):
While I’ve heard the album but what can you tell the fans in your personal opinion to be expected on the new album, “Disobey”?
Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves):
I think the album is one of the most versatile heavy records to come out in a while, especially for a new album. We do everything from extremely brutal, screaming metal with breakdowns and blast beats to beautiful ballads and everything in between. Disobey is undeniably modern, but has enough a foot in the history of metal to appeal to older fans too. I really think we’ve opened up a new lane for modern heavy bands.
Toney Emmons (New Transcendence):
What do you expect or have you come to expect of the bands you will be touring with, Shinedown, Starset and Five Finger Death Punch? – Have you ever met any of the bands before now?
Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves):
I’ve gotten to tour with 5 Finger Death Punch with my old band God Forbid, but this is a whole new ballgame. To use another baseball metaphor, this is really the big league for the hard rock in metal. It’s arena rock, and for that to be our first tour, it’s incredible. Now we are on a tour doing amphitheaters with 5FDP, Breaking Benjamin, and Nothing More and we are talking about crowds ranging from 10-20,000 every night. It’s been a lesson in professionalism and showmanship, and everyone has just been so nice and accommodating. The support from all the bands has been incredible.
Toney Emmons (New Transcendence):
How does it feel to have Bad Wolves going since God Forbid? – What kind of feedback have you personally received for the two singles and the cover of “Zombie”?
Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves):
I am amazed to just still be here doing this. I had resigned myself to be making money outside of music and doing music for fun, so this band taking off really took me by surprise. The response has been crazy. I have been getting hit up by friends and family I haven’t heard from in years. That goes back to the overwhelming part of the attention I mentioned earlier in the interview. I am a little suspicious of new found attention to be honest. I’m the same guy I was a year ago and people are treating me completely differently. Fame is a dangerous game. I don’t think I have totally come to grips with it. I want to be treated like a normal guy.
Toney Emmons (New Transcendence):
How is it working with past members of Devildriver and Divine Heresy in your ranks? – Would you say you (Bad Wolves) would be considered a super group?
Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves):
Tommy and I have been jamming together since 2003 so it’s amazing that something we are working on is actually taking off. And John is one of my best friends and Devildriver and God Forbid did a bunch of touring together. These are my homies so we already have long standing relationships. I think the 3 of us all have type A personalities so figuring out the workflow took some time, but we have figured it out. Supergroup is really in the eye of the beholder. We all have a resumé, and it opens some doors, but it wasn’t about putting out a band with “name” guys. We just wanted people who are talented. It just so happened these were the guys that made the band work.
Toney Emmons (New Transcendence):
What words would you like to convey to the fans in the masses? – Any words of wisdom so to speak
Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves):
The only words for the fans I have is gratitude. I can’t communicate my appreciation to be able to have this opportunity to make music for a living and meet all of these incredible people and be in a band with such incredible musicians. The wisdom would be to carry that gratitude into every aspect of life.
