Interview: Trust In Fear Records
IWrestled AMe-Once Stephens
I’m sitting here with Robby and Jesse of Trust In Fear Records. What’s up guys?
talking to Bear..
Not a lot, listening over Band Submissions!
Tell me guys, what made you start this label and what makes you different from other labels?
we started it to stop lies and decpetion that other labels have been spreading, our motto “we are a family” sums up that we take on very few bands and treat them like they were our own. we have nothing but the best intentions, we strive to release the freshest music and the flashiest videos!
Basically we strive to bring honesty and a sense of family to the table, we aren’t here to steal bands hard earned money and profit, instead we focus on bringing a band to it’s full potential
That’s a great approach and I’m sure it will, in turn, make your label thrive better. It’s always great to treat your artists well and I know Robby, being an artist, you know how it is because you’ve been on a major label in the past.
yes sir i have, i want to take the expirences i have had myself and make them better for others.
Being as this label was just started, what do you have in store for the world so far?
so far we have a variety of different things we offer, and tons of expirience behind our team, my co owner and i are both touring artist. and have worked with major labels and bands.
Both myself and Robby have experience in the business already, my old band was signed as well, and we learned a lot in the year we were on the label, but with that being said, i have also branched out into management the past year since the fall of my last band, for a few months i was playing in Once In a Lifetime, who are also signed to heads&Tails Records, same as Despsised Virtue
and what Robby said, aha!
our graphic designer angel david is only the best at what he does! and puts out great videos for the label as well!
He is an Angel afterall ;D
Sounds like an incredible deal you guys have going. Considering you guys are touring artists, what got you guys into playing music? Where did the love spawn from?
the love of making people smile! i love to bring joy! thats my sole reason for music,
My father was honestly what got me into the scene, he was signed to a Major label in the 80’s (Network Records) And the stories he told me as a child always drove me to achieve the same, he has honestly helped me spawn into what i am today, also my views on music are what drive me, i am an advocate for suicide as I have lost a few people in my life including my beautiful girlfriend to it, so it really helps me voice my inner emotions and use it to help others have a voice, music is everything and it can honestly help so much when portrayed correctly.
100% agreed^
It’s always good to have a background in music. It helps you build your style and progress as an artist. Tell me, do you guys play an instrument or instruments at all?
i sing/scream play guitar/bass/drums/piano and a bit of synth. im a jack of all trades
Primarily i am a guitarist and bassist, but with my dad being a drummer i have taken up a bit of drumming as well, i do sing cleans aswell, and piano is a love! Basically I’m a go to guy, anything with strings i will play or learn!
For a while i got really into electronic music, so i used to program and play synth a lot?
Do either of you have a classical background in music?
i took music theory and chorus in high school and have been involved with the writing of a symphonic band but nothing really in depth.
I most certainly do actually, i play a TON of classical guitar, i find it really helps open my mind to writing, finger style is some of my favorite and honestly i love the challenge and open tunings i get to play around with
Also, i have studied a load of Theory and am able to read music, so in that sense i am trained to.
Even though i am a metal head, my true love in music, is Jazz and Blues, i don’t actually play a lot of metal in my free time unless im writing.
It’s always great to have a classical background, due to the fact that the simple things you learn, can be adapted and molded to fit your style in essence.
i agree with that statement bear.
Exactly,
I, myself, sing a lot. I’ve learned a lot of things except how to really project my voice and create fire in it. Is there any advice that you guys can give me or our readers in order to help us strengthen our vocal ability?
emotion, raw unpreserved emotion. thats how i learned to sing/scream. get that anger, that joy, that pain and use it to make your voice describe that feeling.
Uhm, well right now i am currently rebuilding my voice as i have had a few surgeries on my throat the past few months due to an accident, but basically sing from your diaphragm and focus on breathing techniques, posture is everything when you sing you should be able to stand straight up and look in the mirror if your shoulders move when you sing you are singing from the wrong part, once you learn control of air you will find yourself running out of air less, and being able to project more
Thank you guys, that helps alot, actually!
always here to help.
As am i, so basically Robby explained how to create fire, and I focused more on the technical side of things.
My next question is about touring: I know you guys have toured in the past, what has your experience been like?
amazing, meeting people who just adore you and want pictures and autographs are fucking amazing, cause i don’t think of my self as “Famous” but these fans do so it makes me feel amazing.
I’m actually super fresh off of tour, like 2 weeks. We were gone for about a month, basically if there is anything i can say to bands out there it is this; Expect to want to punch someone, when you are stuck with someone for 24/7 2, 3, 4 weeks there is a lot of stress that comes into play, so with that being said thats one experience, but on a side note its honestly great, i LOVE to travel and play shows meeting people is always great, you are going to hit bumpy parts of the road but always look for the good in the matter. Also, don’t expect to eat like kings on tour, the value menu will be your best friend hands down.
Here’s a question I like to ask everyone that I interview: There are a lot of bands who like to play pranks on each other on tour. Do you guys engage in this? If so, what is the best prank you have pulled on a band or management? What is the worst that has been pulled on you?
HELL YEAH! best prank my ex-band all ran naked into Alesana’s tour van xD best one we have hands down xD was my first tour, and my favorite tour.
Oh god yes, tour pranks are my life, we toured with this band kingsland and obviously i live in canada so lots of snow, one day they buried like our whole van, and silly stringed the hell out it one night too. but we got them back cause after one of our sets it was really dark out, so we ran to the car and we had peanutbutter and nutella with us, and we did up all the door handles, covered there van in snow, buried the tires, rubbed vasoline all over the van, threw water on the windshield so it would freeze, it was fun i LOVE tour pranks
haha those are some epic pranks! Best ones I’ve heard about so far!
Alright guys, that just about wraps it up. I appreciate the time you guys took out of your busy schedules to do this interview. Is there anything else you would like to say to our readers before you go?
SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC! don’t be a to quick to jump the gun! if a label offers you to sign and your paying them for something with out a contract, YOU WILL GET SCREWED.
That’s a great message and I fully support it
We are a family, if you ever feel lost or misguided, sad whatever it may be feel free to contact one of us personally, we love to help, we want to help everyone out as much as we can, not just the bands on our label, Music gives you a voice, don’t be afraid to use it ever! It’s your most powerful tool in life, Trust in Fear Records we do it for you guys not for us! We are all a family, and together we will run the world!
Incredibly true! Thank you guys once again for doing this and I will hit you up with a link when it’s up great interview!
