Review: Coronet – The Greater of Two Fires

“The Greater of Two Fires” could mean anything, really. It could be a synonym for the “lesser of two evils”, it could mean a struggle within or any number of things, but one thing is for sure, Coronet has found their calling. Hailing from Dallas, TX, these guys make me proud to be a Texan. They have taken the boring, bland quality that most post-hardcore bands seem to throw out these days and molded it into something compelling and truly ear-popping. Their debut EP, “The Greater of Two Fires” is a statement to all of those who said they couldn’t make it. If you’re a fan of bands like Oh, Sleeper, Our Last Night, Of Machines, etc… you’re going to love Coronet!

Their debut single, “Lion’s Teeth”, released back in July of 2013, destroyed any preconceived notions I may have had about the band.  It’s fast, it’s heavy and it tugs at the heart, but that was only the beginning. What REALLY caught my ear was when they released their 2nd single, “Viper” which features fellow Dallas Texan, David Southern (Set the Sun). This track really pops, the lyric video for it (which I will include below) is very well put together and Southern brings an amazing twist to this already incredible track. Guitarists Matthew Zafra & Ladarius Morgan really shine through on this one, though! I thought maybe that would be the high point of the EP, I was pretty stunned when I heard the rest and found out I was wrong! I love this EP, through and through. From beginning to end, it’s relentless in it’s plight to sound heavy, yet bring hope. These guys really knew what they were doing when they set out to record this EP!

So if you’re looking for a fresh sound that will really capture your heart, look no further than Coronet’s “The Greater of Two Fires”. The band has released it for free download (or pay what you want) on the popular music merch site, BandCamp, so you have NO excuses not to check it out!
