Brand new Massachusetts hardcore outfit, Death Ray Vision is not your ordinary band. In fact, you may even call them one of those “supergroups”. Formed by a current members of Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Overcast and Cannae, this is a band who has been through and seen it all. Clocking in at 14:22, Get Lost or Get Dead is just long enough to get you pumped up and wanting to listen again. No matter how many times you listen to this incredible EP, it never seems to get old. Plus, it’s nice to see the guys stepping away from their current bands and diving into their hardcore roots. Upon my first listen, I was instantly pumped up and wanting to mosh, which isn’t like me because, normally, I’m not a really big fan of hardcore music. DRV definitely have an incredible amount of energy and stay power in my opinion though and I think they will go down with the greats in the genre.

Shattered Frames: This track clocks in at just under 2 minutes and was chosen as the first single to introduce you to the band. It’s an incredibly fast-paced and driving track that will have you moving. Brian’s vocals and Pete and Zack’s guitar parts shine through the most, but the rest of the band also make this track come together.

Get Lost or Get Dead: This track is a little longer than the opening track and has a bit more stay power, in my eyes. I like the way that Brian’s vocals diversify in this track, which is what makes it one of my favorites. The really driving part of this track though is the incredibly fast drumbeat you hear in the back, spearheaded by Colin Conway. About halfway through, the track loses speed and gets a bit heavier, but that doesn’t stop it from being an incredibly powerful track on the EP.

Not For Glory: The longest track on the EP and therefore, has a lot to live up to. But overall, this track is the most powerful track on the album and there is nothing taken away from it by adding to the length. Like I said, while this EP is just long enough to get you pumped, it stays gritty, heavy and balls-out til the end. My favorite part of this track is Pete and Zack’s guitars and the killer drum parts from Colin. Mike D’s bass parts shine through quite a bit on this one as well.

Chainsaw of Bees: This is an entirely instrumental track, but it shows just how talented these musicians are. Mike’s bass is driving and groovy, Colin’s drums are killer and Pete and Zack shred it up like no other. My favorite part of this one is where it slows down toward the end and goes into a breakdown. I can definitely see this one getting the crowd to go nuts.

Drown the Light: We’ve come to the final track on the EP, “Drown the Light” which probably has one of the most killer solos I’ve ever heard. Pete and Zack rip it up and Colin’s drum skills really show on this one, faster than lightning and right on key. Brian’s vocals are more reminiscent of Shadows Fall on this track, which is pretty cool because I’m a big SF fan.

Final Thoughts:

If you’re looking for something to get you amped up and ready to fight, look no further. This has everything you will need. Like I said, it’s very short so there’s not a whole lot to take from it other than just musicians having fun and throwing all they’ve got into it. I recommend any hardcore fans or fans of metal in general to go pick up Get Lost or Get Dead and see what I’m talking about! Out May 14th on Bullet Tooth Records!
