Review: Dunsmuir – Dunsmuir
Artist: Dunsmuir
Album: Dunsmuir
Rating: 8.5/10
Forged from the fires of Hades, blessed by the Gods of Rock and born from pure chaos, Dunsmuir has awakened. Four damned souls make up this heavy metal massacre: Neal Fallon (Clutch, The Company Band), Dave Bone (The Company Band), Brad Davis (The Company Band, Fu Manchu) and Vinny Appice (Dio, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, Big Noize). Together, they seek to bring the forces of Hell to Earth, one riff at a time. Their debut, self-titled album is 10-tracks of balls-to-the-wall, in your face, no frills heavy metal. Conceptual in nature, the album progresses as they seek to tell you about different aspects of Greek Mythology, including Charybdis.
If you’re a fan of Clutch, you’ll immediately get into this band. With Fallon’s signature vocals and lyrical style, this band can easily be compared to Clutch. However, with the star line-up it possesses, it does a great job of setting itself apart. With tracks like “The Bats (Are Hungry Tonight)” which tells of the bats that plague the Underworld, “Our Only Master” a ball-busting, scorcher of a track that downplays religion’s importance in society, in place of Science, and “Deceiver,” which tells of the deceiving nature of man and how, while the world pays attention to the less important things on Earth, they miss the true wonders of the Universe. Boasting enough punch to knock the biggest, baddest angel to their knees, catchy enough to be played on the radio and diverse & bold enough to keep you interested throughout the duration, this album is not to be missed.
If you’re a fan of great heavy metal, “supergroups” or concept albums… Dunsmuir will appeal to you most. However, if you’re just a casual listener or what I like to call a “passive” listener, you’ll still find something to enjoy here. The bottom line is this: Buy the album, crank it up to 11 and let Fallon and his brothers bring you the soundtrack to the apocalypse!
