Review – Sevendust – All I See Is War
Artist: Sevendust
Album: All I See Is War
Rating: 10/10
Sevendust have erupted on the scene with, “All I See Is War” and have exploded onto the charts with their first single, “Dirty“, but the album is a real octane driven onslaught. This album was outstanding.
Sevendust’s previous albums carry some edginess but, “All I See Is War” has some emotion with the onslaught. The album breaks out with the single release, “Dirty” and Lajon Witherspoon’s vocals deliver.
Sevendust is an American alternative metalband from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in 1994 by bassist Vince Hornsby, drummer Morgan Rose and guitarist John Connolly. After their first demo, lead vocalist Lajon Witherspoon and guitarist Clint Lowery joined the group. The members settled on the name Sevendust and released their self-titled debut album on April 15, 1997. They have attained success with three consecutive RIAA gold certified albums, a Grammy nomination, and have sold millions of albums worldwide.
“The Truth” is a track that stands out to me. The track offers a hard intro with some some screaming vocals. “The Truth” has these insane riffs that completely back up Lajon’s clean vocals. This is a track that demands to be heard.
“Life Deceives You” greets you with a more upbeat rhythm before exploding into a dramatic and energetic chorus that is definitely both haunting and chilling in its rawness and delivery. The song in it’s entirety will send chills down your spine.
According to AllMusic, Sevendust became one of the rising acts in late 1990s heavy metal with an aggressive blend of bottom-heavy riffs and soulful, accessible melodies. While its quite unclear exactly what classification they fall in, I find it irrelevant. The fact is that Sevendust have most certainly been evolving throughout the years and they have made another masterpiece for the masses.
“Risen” is a hidden gem track, because this is Sevendust, perfectly summed up with a reminiscent look into past albums, With the lyrics:
“If I fall would you pick me up?
Or kick me down again?
If I tell you my deepest thoughts
Would you hear me out?
And help me rise again?“
This is Lajon’s pleading in his lyrics with his soulful melodic vocals, which he is constantly praised for. “Risen” is similar to the hit song “Ugly” because it boasts a similarly stirring composition in it’s breakdown, taking you back to classic Sevendust, like they tend to do. This is definitely a piece of Sevendust’s past brought into 2018.
I would like to say overall, “All I See Is War” is progressive and refreshing and it’s nice to hear Lajon’s melodic vocals in mix of the heavy with the emotional in line with the rest of his bandmates. Sevendust has really stepped the game up not only for themselves but for the, Nu-Metal, Alternative and Modern Rock scene. “All I See Is War” is available now through Rise Records!
