Single Review – Our Last Night – Broken Lives
As you may have already seen or heard, Our Last Night, a post-hardcore band signed with Epitaph Records, came out with a new single: Broken Lives. The last time any original content had come out from OLN was Common Ground, which was a track released with a music video in 2016. Now, they are back in 2017 and hitting hard with this new track. So, as done with Of Mice & Men’s single, it is time for a review!
To start, the track starts you out with some synth and a chorus. From that, we are launched into some very Bring Me The Horizon type synth and electronic work. Then we are introduced to the first verse which is a standard sounding verse in talks of Our Last Night’s style. Leading into a robust and powerful chorus that we heard earlier and rinse and repeat. There is one instance of a Trevor scream, but it’s mostly a clean song, in terms of vocals. Lyrically, it is about what you would expect from OLN, something in relevance about there being a better tomorrow. However, they make an interesting and brief mention of what I would understand to be an allegory using the Illuminati. Definitely a first for me to hear from anyone so kudos to OLN on that unique use of Illuminati. Instrumentally, this song plays very well with the image and style of OLN. It maintains integrity for the band as a whole which is excellent to see, considering as of recently, many bands have began the process of trying new things with their music. Some maintain their sound while being something different, and some just change completely, be it good or bad. I’d say this was a step in the right direction.
Broken Lives, I believe, is an excellent introduction into whatever OLN has in the works. Until that releases, check out Broken Lives on Spotify and buy it on ITunes! Also, don’t forget to subscribe to their YouTube Channel! The teaser will be below.
