The Funeral Portrait Welcome You to Suffocate City and Invite Spencer Charnas Along for the Ride

You find yourself choking, gasping for air. You cry for help but none will come and you find yourself fading into the black. Will you ever escape? This is, of course, a metaphor but it lends to the idea of being crippled by fear of something that you cannot escape. A dead-end job, a failing relationship, crushing debt and so much more can mimic the feeling of being suffocated. There is a place that has been designed to do just that, exploiting and playing off of that which one fears most.

Enter “Suffocate City,” the latest hymn from southern emo rock phenoms, The Funeral Portrait. The track is designed to speak to that fear and the idea of feeling suffocated. Mean and gritty guitars, pulse-pounding drums and lyrics that are belted with conviction make this a must-listen. Having been a crowd favorite since its live debut, it’s not hard to see why this track has been so popular and today, we finally get to hear what that studio version sounds like. Who better to join them than the master of theatrical horror, Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills. Just as eerie as it is punchy and memorable, this track truly adds a checkmark to everything you’d want to hear from the already-unique sound of the band. Throw in some claps that the crowd can join in on and this track becomes something that could be their next “C’est La Vie” (if you’ve followed the band or look into their history, you’ll see this significance).

The Funeral Portrait, while having been around for quite awhile at this point, are truly finding their footing in the music scene. Unrelenting with their touring schedule, they’ve shared the stage with bands like Shinedown, Ice Nine Kills, TX2 and so many more. They’re even slated to hit their first festival appearances this year at Louder Than Life and Aftershock Festival, which will easily be their largest crowds yet. In addition, they’ve been invited to join Marilyn Manson on his only dates this year, as well as a full tour with Five Finger Death Punch. All tour dates can be viewed below. Each track that they’ve released since signing to Better Noise Music has shown great promise, building from it’s predecessor and showing that they mean business. While the music is clearly aimed at having fun, they have a message to spread and they’re doing it well. The video for “Suffocate City” depicts a high school prom, with The Funeral Portrait as the evenings’ performers. As the performance goes on and the crowd really begins to find itself hypnotized by this hymn, things begin to go awry. Throw in some familiar characters from previous videos and a memorable performance by “Coach” Charnas and we’ve got one of the bands’ most high budget videos yet. Check it out and let them know what you think! More info on their upcoming album will be unveiled in due time, but you can check out the current singles on all streaming services.
