Some realities, no matter how hard you try, are hard to swallow. There are moments in life you don't want to believe are real but, in the end, they are realities and they shape the present and the future. The Butterfly Effect teaches us that we should never alter the past, for fear of affecting the future in unprecedented ways. It teaches us that stepping on a single butterfly can have catastrophic effects on the future. So one sits with these thoughts and ponders the realities of life, wondering how it got this way. Often, these moments trigger periods of self-discovery and a forms a chrysalis into the person you're meant to become. It's through this type of mentality that NY's Advents has crafted their latest album, A Bitter Truth You Can't Undo. Songs crafted from the darkest depths of the human psyche and designed to pull the listener to the light that is at the end and, ultimately, to the realization that it can't rain all the time.

The album rips open with "Hate Myself," which immediately pulls the listener in and violently shoves them into the nearest wall. Vocalist Tyler Simpson screams about a love lost and how, putting his trust in this person, became the beginning of his self-hatred. This song has a lot going for it, especially in terms of the guitar rhythms. There are also some electronic elements that help it stand out and sounds like it will be a banger to hear live. The video depicts the band playing in what appears to be a haunted house, with a female character who has no face appearing frequently, dancing or moving closer to Simpson as the story progresses. When the song kicked in, I figured this would just be another run-of-the-mill metalcore track, but when the chorus kicked in, I was immediately sold. There is a break in the bridge that builds into the final chorus which is a standout moment on the album, as well.

I've listened to this album several times and I don't think any track hits me as hard, emotionally, as "Waking Up to the Dark." This track, in almost its entirety, is melodic but is such a standout in terms of how they convey a sense of loss and regret. There are a lot of songs that have those "put up your lighters" moments and I believe that, more than any, this is Advents contribution to that movement. You'll definitely find yourself shedding tears if you listen to this closely enough.

"Silk" is the only track on the album to have a feature on it. Mike Garrow is instantly recognizable going into the second verse and then into the bridge, where his lower-range screams stand apart from Simpson's more mid-range. This is another heavily emotional track but has a bit of an edge to it, as well. Chugging guitars and pulse-pounding drum beats. I think the most interesting part of this track, though, is that the verses are much more prominent, as the drum beat underlying the vocals is very minimal but fast-paced. This song is about hitting your lowest point in a relationship, but being willing to do whatever you can to save it, despite the path of destruction that lies before you.

"Kingdom Falls" is another standout track and is possibly the heaviest one on the album, which closes it out. This track, as described by the band, is about the previous musical directions that they had attempted to take the band, which didn't pan out the way they'd hoped and how they got to where they are now. It can alternatively be used as a reminder of the album theme and that's stating you can't change the past but you can shape your future. Every time I hear the bridge into the final chorus on this album, I find myself closing my eyes and getting carried away by the melody that takes it to the end. I truly believe that this one, if not already, will be a crowd favorite.

A Bitter Truth You Can't Undo is a reminder that living in the past is only to your detriment. No matter the pain you endure, the paths that crumble under your feet or the curveballs that life throws your way.. you can overcome them all. Advents have carved their name into the heart of the metalcore scene with this album. They're carving their own paths and it's clear that this only the beginning of a very bright future. You can catch them on tour with Shallow Sky on the "Worlds Collide Tour" which can be found below.
