Review: DOMi & JD BECK - WHO ASKED? [2026]
Artist: DOMi & JD BECK
Album: WHO ASKED?
Are you fan of music that you can just listen to and experience? Music that just nestles itself right into your ears? Look no further than the sophomore album from jazz duo DOMi & JD BECK , "Who Asked?". The duo, consisting of French keyboardist Domi Louna and American Drummer JD Beck, have worked with the likes of Thundercat, Anderson .Paak, Ariana Grande, and more since their start in 2018. Today, we're talking about "Who Asked?" and diving into what I have enjoyed about this album.
To start, I already had high hopes for this album. I had an idea of how it was going to sound after hearing a snippet of the material on TikTok. This was also my general introduction to them. Since then I was eagerly awaiting this drop. As a disclaimer, I have yet to dive into their prior material so this review will just be focusing on this album.
An accurate way, to me, to describe this album to someone is to think of it as if every track is a puzzle. As you are listening to the tracks gaining more momentum, the puzzle pieces start to form together and make a more comprehensive picture. Every single track does this. There wasn't a single weak track that I found in my time listening. I was also pleasantly surprised by them not only including vocals in tracks, but also at well it all just blended together in a dynamic, but soft, manner.
The drumming is impeccable. The absolute mastery of the instrument is felt every time it comes on. Of course, that's to be expected from what many consider both members of this group to be: Child Prodigies. JD Beck started with piano at 5 and switched to drums at 9. Needless to say JD's familiarity of the drums makes itself known quite prominently.
This, accompanied with DOMi's keyboard playing, which they started playing since they were 3, makes for a deadly combination. The keys take a on a few different forms through the album, but overall they flow intricately with JD's drumming. One always goes hand in hand with the other. Not to forgo the vocals, as they are the icing on top.
I would say that the only negative I would find for this album is maybe a sense of it being repetitive. However, if you're someone who likes music that you can just listen to and absorb with no effort, this is it. Play it in your car or headphones, set some time aside, and enjoy and experience what "Who Asked?" has to offer.
My favorite track of this album would have to be EXiT. The score I would give is a solid 9/10. I would highly recommend you check this as well as the duo out. Just put it on while on the road and have yourself a journey full of whimsey.
Here, also, is a medley of live extracts you can find of their new album that the duo plays:
